Merging cultural activism and photography, Sunil Gupta creates compositions that exist within the frames of politics and theatre to explore themes of identity and homosexuality. Born in 1953 in India, moving to Canada as a teenager in the late 1960s. He trained at The New School for Social Research in New York in 1976 before moving to London to study at West Surrey College of Art & Design and the Royal College of Art. His works deal with issues surrounding homosexuality, particularly the personal and social implications of being homosexual in both Eastern and Western societies. He is often motivated to expose the ‘ordinary’, even invisible look of homosexuality, as well as the ways in which younger generations have sought to disrupt this invisibility. He has had numerous solo exhibitions across the world and is featured in both public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Royal Ontario Museum, Arts Council, Tate Britain and Harvard University.
